FRANCE
César Baldaccini (1921–1998), known simply as César, is a major figure in 20th-century sculpture and a key member of the Nouveau Réalisme movement. He gained international recognition in the 1960s with his compressed car sculptures, which challenged traditional sculptural practices. He later developed his famous polyurethane expansions, continuing his exploration of material transformation. Alongside these experimental works, he produced iconic bronzes, including his well-known “Thumb” sculptures. His work is held in major public collections such as the Centre Pompidou, and remains highly influential in contemporary sculpture.
