Alastair was born in 1962 near Johannesburg, South Africa.
He attended King Edward Vii School and then did his compulsory two-year national service in the South African army.
Exposed to and inspired by marine life during annual vacations at his family’s cottage on Natal’s south coast, Alastair took sculpture classes.
This initiation encouraged him to observe the details and shapes of fish with meticulous care, which was to have a lasting influence on his artistic approach.
Guided by his father’s passion for motor racing and with a background in balance engineering, Alastair moved to Europe with the ambition of working in the motorsport industry.
His career spanned 22 years, including 14 in Formula 1, four as chief mechanic for the Benetton F1 team and 10 as chief mechanic for the BAR and Honda Grand Prix teams.
Drawing similarities between motorsport engineering and the natural world, Alastair combines his engineering skills with his love of sculpture by working with carbon fiber, his material of choice.
Its anatomically precise parts are created from used F1 components purchased directly from current Grand Prix teams.
Alastair’s work has been exhibited worldwide and is appreciated by a growing number of collectors and investors.
Now in his eighteenth year as a full-time artist, Alastair is recognized as a pioneer of high-end technical engineering applied to art. From his custom-built studio, Studio 45, near Oxford, England, he realizes a wide range of projects, private commissions and installations with the help of his skilled team.
Last year, the renowned Saatchi gallery in London gave him the opportunity to exhibit an incredible David made of 470kg of carbon, an almost exact replica of Michelangelo’s famous sculpture.
Also last year, the famous Balenciaga fashion house commissioned a carbon hat from him.
Finally, in 2024, Alastair was chosen to design and produce the trophies presented to the winners of the British Formula 1 Grand Prix.
