artist/ Hartung

France

Hans Hartung (1904–1989) was a Franco-German painter and a major figure of post-war Lyrical Abstraction. His work, characterized by gestural energy, experimentation, and emotional intensity, explores the expressive power of line, color, and movement. Hartung employed a wide range of tools — brushes, spray guns, combs, even tree branches — to create dynamic and deeply personal compositions. A refugee in France during World War II, he became a French citizen in 1946. His influential contributions to abstract art left a lasting impact on European modernism and continue to inspire contemporary artists.
