Athena Jahantigh’s animal sculptures carry on their arched backs an immense iconographic heritage linking them to the cave art of her native Persia; inspiration that is both emotional and nostalgic for this artist living and working in France since 2003, but which blends perfectly with her other great formal source, cave painting. The result is small marvels of hieratic and callipyge animals, with strong and sensual shapes endowed with a particularly current sculptural presence. These are contemporary sculptures with deep roots.
